What is considered reasonable for sign language interpretation? Do Deaf employees need an interpreter everyday?

No, they do not. A conversation needs to happen between the individual and their employer on which days/ activities require the support of an interpreter. Usually meetings, events, workshops, and other activities requiring a lot of back and forth communication. Alternative forms of communication can be explored for other times - such as assistive text to speech/captioning software, written communication - note pads, emails, texts. Hope this helps!

Yes @Andera, Reasonable accommodations for sign language interpretation vary depending on the workplace and individual needs. While Deaf employees may not need an interpreter every day, providing interpretation services for important meetings, training sessions, and daily interactions can be crucial. Employers should engage in an interactive process with Deaf employees to determine necessary accommodations, considering factors like job requirements, work environment, and individual communication preferences. Additionally, building capacity within the team is important, as the Deaf employee can support the team in learning sign language, enabling easy interactions to the extent that in the absence of the interpreter, it's not a panic.
